GMS 7133 Advanced Molecular Virology


Description

This course follows GMS 6121 Infectious diseases and provides a more detailed molecular analysis of human pathogenic viruses. Replication mechanisms, molecular pathogenesis, host-pathogen interactions, immune evasion strategies, development of antivirals and vaccines, and the relationship between viral evolution and emerging viruses are taught using representative viruses from different viral families.

Course Objectives

Upon completion of this course, student will be able to:

  • Describe molecular details of replication of viruses with different nucleic acid genomes.
  • Explain how specific antiviral therapies interfere with viral biology to treat infection.
  • Compare molecular pathogenesis mechanisms of viruses in their interactions with the host during infection and disease at the cellular and organismal levels.
  • Describe how specific viruses evade and/or subvert host innate and adaptive immune functions.
  • Explain how current vaccines prevent specific viral diseases and propose how new vaccines could be developed.
  • Explain how viral evolution affects emerging viral pathogens
