Description

Introduction to the basic bioinformatic tools used in computational biology for life science research. The course will use web-based resources that analyze gene and protein sequences as pertinent data examples.

Course Goals

After successful completion of this course, students will be able to:

  • Retrieve information on genes and proteins from biological and genomic databases
  • Predict genes from DNA sequences
  • Identify promoters and regulatory elements in DNA sequences
  • Analyze protein sequences
  • Compare protein and DNA sequences
  • Visualize and analyze protein structures
  • Construct and interpret simple phylogenies
